What is bakelite

What is bakelite

Bakelite is also known as bakelite, and its chemical name is phenolic resin. It has high mechanical strength, good insulation, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is widely used in various electrical manufacturing materials, such as switches, motor housings, kitchen utensil handles, etc.

what is bakelite?Bakelite, also known as phenolic resin (PF), is an industrial plastic product manufactured in the United States in 1910.

The raw materials for phenolic resin production are mainly phenol and aldehyde, and phenol and formaldehyde are commonly used. They are polymerized by condensation reaction under the catalysis of acid, alkali and other catalysts. There are two kinds of industrial production: dry method and wet method.

Under the action of different catalysts, phenol and aldehyde can produce two types of phenolic resin: one is thermoplastic phenolic resin, the other is thermosetting phenolic resin. The former can be cured into a block structure only by adding a curing agent and heating, and the latter can be cured into a block structure only by heating without adding a curing agent.

Thermoplastic phenolic resin and thermosetting phenolic resin can only be used through the exchange network formed by curing. The curing process is the continuation of shape polycondensation and the formation of shape products. This process is different from the melting and solidification of general thermoplastics. Both physical and chemical processes are irreversible.

Phenolic resins can be injection molded in a similar way to thermoplastics. Machining Phenolic resin for injection molding requires good fluidity, can be molded under low injection pressure, high thermal stiffness, fast curing speed, good surface gloss of plastic parts, easy to demold, and does not pollute the mold. However, injection molding also has its shortcomings. For example, the melt is limited by the type of filler, and it is not suitable for forming plastic parts with more inserts. A large number of gates and channels cannot be recycled after curing and can only be discarded.

In short, thermoplastic phenolic resins can be produced with ordinary injection molding machines, but the process conditions are strictly controlled. The thermosetting phenolic resin must be produced by a special injection molding machine for phenolic resin, and the mold also adopts a special design structure.

The characteristics of bakelite injection products are insulation, high temperature resistance, no water absorption, and high strength, so they are mostly used in electrical appliances. Because it has good insulation and high plasticity like wood, it is called bakelite. Bakelite is made of powdered phenolic resin, mixed with sawdust, asbestos, or clay, and then thermoset with a mold at high temperature. Phenolic resin is a kind of human synthetic resin.
